C. Ray Nagin
⚠️ All Corruption Flags (2)
In February 2014, a federal jury in New Orleans convicted former Mayor C. Ray Nagin on 20 of 21 counts in the federal indictment, including conspiracy, bribery, honest services wire fraud, money laundering, and filing false tax returns. Prosecutors proved Nagin accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes and kickbacks from city contractors during his 2002-2010 tenure as New Orleans Mayor — including free granite for his family's granite countertop business, paid trips to Jamaica, Las Vegas, and New York — in exchange for steering city contracts to the bribe-paying firms. Several of the contracts were for post-Hurricane Katrina recovery work.
On July 9, 2014, U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan sentenced Nagin to 10 years in federal prison plus restitution. He began serving his sentence in September 2014. Nagin was released to house arrest in April 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
