On February 12, 2025, a federal jury in Chicago convicted former Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan on 10 counts including conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States, four counts of using interstate facilities to promote unlawful activity, three counts of wire fraud, and two counts of bribery. The jury deadlocked on the top racketeering conspiracy count.
On June 13, 2025, U.S. District Judge John Robert Blakey sentenced Madigan, 83, to seven and a half years in federal prison and a $2.5 million fine, plus three years of supervised release. Madigan is required to serve at least 85% of his sentence; he will be approximately 90 years old before becoming eligible for release.
