Leland Yee
⚠️ All Corruption Flags (2)
On March 26, 2014, the FBI arrested California State Senator Leland Yee on federal charges of public corruption and gun trafficking. The affidavit charged Yee with violating multiple federal statutes including honest services wire fraud — alleging he accepted bribes from undercover FBI agents — and conspiracy to deal firearms without a license and illegally import firearms from the Philippines. Yee had been a prominent gun-control advocate who sponsored multiple anti-gun bills throughout his Senate tenure.
In 2015, Yee pleaded guilty to felony racketeering charges covering money laundering, political corruption, arms trafficking, and bribery. He admitted receiving more than $40,000 in bribes and plotting in a never-completed international arms deal to smuggle weapons from the Philippines. On February 24, 2016, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer sentenced Yee to 5 years in federal prison. Yee was released on June 26, 2020.
