On December 1, 2023, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 311-114 to expel George Santos, making him just the sixth person in U.S. history to be expelled from the House. The expulsion followed a House Ethics Committee report finding 'overwhelming evidence' of misconduct.
In October 2023, Santos was charged with 23 federal counts of fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and making false statements. Prosecutors alleged he stole from his donors, used campaign funds for personal expenses, submitted false campaign finance disclosures, and fraudulently collected personal unemployment benefits. Santos pleaded guilty in August 2024.
On April 25, 2025, U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert sentenced Santos to 87 months (over seven years) in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release. He reported to federal prison to begin his sentence.
