In September 2006, former Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio) pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy and making false statements, admitting he accepted bribes — including gifts and lavish trips — from convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff in exchange for using his position on the House Administration Committee to benefit Abramoff's clients. In January 2007, U.S. District Judge Ellen Huvelle sentenced Ney to 2½ years in federal prison. Ney was the only sitting member of Congress convicted in the Abramoff lobbying scandal.
